A good magazine gives you something to think about, something to enjoy, and a reason to turn the page. That’s what we’re creating with COMPASS, a new publication from Stone Compass Press and Kahuna Research Group, debuting with our November–December 2026 premiere issue. Rooted in Hawaiʻi Island, COMPASS brings together books, intriguing articles, local stories, recipes, puzzles, and people doing good in their communities. Our first 44-page issue celebrates discovery and giving—finding a new author, exploring a question, supporting a local business, or learning about someone making a difference. The connection between SCP and KRG is at the heart of the magazine. Stone Compass Press, KRG’s publishing division, helps authors bring their stories and ideas to readers. Kahuna Research Group brings a curiosity about history, unexplained phenomena, and the world around us. COMPASS gives those interests a shared home, with room for thoughtful questions, practical observation, and fresh perspectives. Our premiere issue spotlights David Tavares and the 10-year anniversary of Black Robe: The Kempo/Kajukenbo Connection. As the first author published by Stone Compass Press, David holds a special place in our story. We look at the man behind the book and the martial arts history he has worked to preserve. Author profiles will continue in future issues, giving readers a closer connection to the people whose books we feature.
There’s plenty to discover beyond the bookshelf. Readers can explore island stories, consider how to document an unusual sighting, try a local haupia recipe, and work through puzzles. Our Good Works section highlights opportunities to help on Hawaiʻi Island, while a feature on Alisha Beston shares her community service and platforms, led by Hands That Speak, Hearts That Understand. We’re also introducing Ask A.I. Kindcraft, a recurring advice column with a KRG spirit: curious, compassionate, and willing to sit with a question before rushing to an answer. Presented as a fictional, AI-assisted editorial voice, the column offers practical reflections on everyday situations. COMPASS is also a place for businesses, authors, and organizations to introduce themselves. The premiere issue features books from SCP, KRG programs, Olëra skincare, and local bookstore Kona Stories. We want readers to find something worth reading, visiting, supporting, or sharing. Writers, authors, and bloggers: you’re invited to collaborate. We welcome article ideas, local perspectives, community stories, and introductions to books our readers should know about. For businesses and organizations interested in advertising, our introductory rates are $400 for a full page and $200 for a half page. Contact us to discuss a placement in an upcoming issue. The November–December premiere is the beginning of a publication we intend to grow with our readers and contributors. Print and digital editions are planned, with release and ordering details to follow through SCP and KRG. For advertising, submissions, and collaboration inquiries, email [email protected]. Welcome to COMPASS. We look forward to sharing the first issue with you.
